  1. Named for the African empire along the Niger River from 400 to
  2. 1240 AD,   Ghana was ruled by Britain for 113 years as the Gold
  3. Coast.  In 1956, the United Nations approved a merger with
  4. British Togoland and full independence came on March 6, 1957. 
  5. Ghana attained republic status within the British Commonwealth in
  6. 1960.  President Kwame Nkrumah built many public projects
  7. including hospitals, schools and the Volta River hydroelectric
  8. and aluminum plant projects.  The country went into deep debt,
  9. Nkrumah jailed opponents and was accused of corruption.  A 1964
  10. referendum gave Nkrumah dictatorial powers and a one-party
  11. socialist state was set-up.  Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966 by an
  12. army coup that expelled Chinese and East German teachers and
  13. technical advisers.  Elections were held in 1969, but further
  14. coups occurred in 1972, 1978, 1979 and 1981.
